Year to Date 2008 Biggest % Winners

Why is this important? Because big winners tend to be good companies with good stories that last longer than 1 year. Because they tend to be the largest gainers for the year. Of course, some may be destined for a 50% pullback as well. They list 3 stocks, PEIX, VSE, AVR. All are down 80% off their 2006 highs and down more than 50% in 2008. They are all up 5% this morning on the Barrons article. They are trading below book value but have lots of debt and are no value plays. Only AVR has a good looking chart with a bottom and base and a PnF buy. VSE is the largest in revenue and has some insider buying. PEIX has heavy insider selling and is the smallest., but also has lots of insider sales.

Latest Ken Fisher - LONG INTC, NOK, GE

Jeffrey Immelt wants General Electric (nyse: GE - news - people ) (32, GE ) to be the prime choice for greenie investors. This has been his ambition for a while; FORBES described it in a cover story three years ago. He is way too late to this party, and in any event most of his company's revenue sources have nothing to do with saving the planet. But ge is still a great firm, and it's soon to be a great stock. Dominant in pretty much everything it does, GE has nonetheless lagged the global stock market since 2004 and is down 23% since last fall. That's because Immelt missed earnings expectations in what the media described as GE's worst blowup since 1987. That year, by the way, was a great time to buy GE. The unpleasant earnings surprise is a small blip in GE's century-long growth story, and this is a good stock for the megacap era I expect over the next few years. It costs 13 times 2008 earnings and yields 3.7%. The Finnish handset maker Nokia (nyse: NOK - news - pe...

From Barrons TechBlog: What’s the outlook for chip stocks? That’s the question at issue tonight at the 12th annual Churchill Club Semiconductor Forecast dinner at the Hyatt in Santa Clara. The lineup is a good one: Bill Tai, general partner of Charles River Ventures, is the moderator. Christopher Danely, analyst at J.P. Morgan. Dan Niles, CEO at Neuberger Berman Technology Management. Mark Lipacis, analyst, Morgan Stanley. Sangeeth Peruri, managing director and portfolio manager, J.&W. Seligman. Stay tuned for live coverage of their observations and picks; keep reloading this post if you’re reading Wednesday night. The highlights follow: Last year there was a slightly different set of players. Jim Covello of Goldman Sachs picked Sandisk (SNDK) as a long and Novellus (NVLS) as a short. Joe Osha of Merrill Lynch picked Texas Instruments (TXN). Niles picked Skyworks (SWKS) and Trident (TRID). Tai picked Microtune (TUNE) and Integrated Device Technology (IDTI). All of them expected the...

The Case for Etrade - Longs : June 4th, 2008

Etrade has had a mighty fall this year (actually last year) due to the credit crisis and subprime loan fallout. It was 25 last summer and got as low as $2. I considered entry at $2 but fear kept me out. I had even considered a run on all my Etrade accounts. Well, it's June and it's really leveled off around $4 and looks like an excellent long entry point. I see 2 favorable articles that discuss ideas. I especially like the Covered call option, as it's a 17% gain by Jan'09 if the stock goes nowhere and 42% gain if it gets to 5 from 4. I do believe downside is minimal. Forbes Top 25 for 2008

We are back with a new group of 25 rapidly growing technology companies, 12 of which are repeats from our prior list. One company, sixth-ranked Cognizant Technology Solutions (nasdaq: CTSH - news - people ), has appeared every year since the inception of the list six years ago. America's 25 Fastest-Growing Tech Companies More on America's 25 Fastest-Growing Tech Companies Our focus is on sales growth--we require at least 10% annualized sales gains over the past five years--but candidates for our list must be profitable over the past 12 months and have Thomson IBES consensus earnings forecasts of at least 10% annualized earnings growth over the next three to five years. Our only other financial hurdle is that we require at least $25 million in sales over the past four quarters. We exclude companies with significant legal problems or with possible accounting or corporate governance issues. For the last two items, we are guided by scores from Audit Integrity of Los Angeles. CREE reports new LED markets growing

Ahead of the Curve: Cree 08Q2 Earnings Review: LED Market Arriving?Font size: A | A | A8:26 AM ET 1/24/08 | Briefing.com reported their fiscal 2008 Q2 results after the close on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. While some might view the results as positive because Cree beat earnings estimates, the more significant positive news is the statements made about the nature of the market for commercial LED lighting. It is this market, we believe, that will eventually be the driver for Cree products. We recommend continued holding for those investors following our investment premise for the company. Exiting The Waiting Period After it became clear in August of 2006 that Cree's presence in the handset LED marketplace had weakened substantially, we declared that Cree had entered a "Waiting Period." The waiting period amounted to an unknown period of time before the market for commercialization of white LED products developed. While Cree itself would not be a vendor of application produ...

Briefing: Bargain Hunting: Corning 1/29/08

Manufacturer Corning (GLW 23.10, +0.73) delivered better than expected fourth quarter earnings results, posting a profit of $0.40 per share, excluding items, on a 16% increase in sales to $1.58 billion. In October the company guided for fourth quarter earnings per share in the range of $0.36 to $0.38 and sales of $1.50 billion to $1.55 billion. The strength in the period was driven by a 25% sales increase in its core Display Technologies segment, which prospered from continued strong global demand for LCD televisions and notebook computers. Telecommunications segment sales dropped 9.0% sequentially, yet that was owed to normal seasonality and was actually a bit better than the forecast for a 10% decline. Sales for the Environmental Technologies segment jumped 22% year-over-year while Life Sciences sales rose 4.0% Importantly, Corning provided some reassuring guidance for the first quarter. It expects sales in the range of $1.59 billion to $1.62 billion and earnings per share in the...

Introduction

What is a TRUM? Where does it come from? Is this a financial word? My interests are technology, sports and stocks, not necessarily in that order. In recent years, my sports interest has gotten me into fantasy sports. I've played in leagues for baseball, basketball, football, NCAA basketball tourney. Fantasy sports allows you the chance to behave and experience the life of being a Real General Manager. My love of numbers and statistics made playing these games fun on 2 accounts. Bringing a greater understanding of the game and the team contributions, it also lets you play with statistics to maximize your team strengths and understand its weaknesses. While playing fantasy sports, I came to reading many sports sites, blogs, etc. Anything to get an advantage and win. Well, what I found was a site called talentedmrroto.com. Matthew Berry is the creater and writer on the site. In the last year, he sold his site to ESPN and now, many folks can read him and watch him on ESPN. ...

Shares of Biogen Idec (BIIB 55.22) traded higher on Monday, gaining more than 3% in pre-market activity, after the Cambridge-based biotechnology company raised its guidance for fiscal 2007 and issued a positive outlook for the following year on sales of its newest multiple sclerosis drug Tysabri. Biogen, which has been struggling with slowing sales of its flagship drug Avonex and recently failed to attract bidders after putting itself up for sale in October, expects this year's earnings to be above the high-end of its previous guidance of $2.60 to $2.70 per share. The consensus estimate currently calls for earnings of $2.62 per share. Etrade - possibly a buy at 2.40

With its stock depressed to multi-year lows, E*Trade Financial (ETFC) announced earlier today its turnaround plan is gaining traction. Shares of the online brokerage firm are up more than 10% in pre-market trading in response. The company recently sold a combined $6.0 billion worth of asset-backed securities portfolios. The most recent sale included $3.0 billion worth of mortgage-backed securities and municipal bonds, which resulted in a loss of less than $5 million. E*Trade's home equity loan portfolio ended 2007 with less than $12 billion in balances. Management expects its 2007 year-end tier 1 capital ratio to be equal to or better than 5.9%. A firm is considered well-capitalized if its ratio is at least 6%. The company's efforts to reduce risk and strengthen its relative capital position bode well for investors awaiting a turnaround. Notably, management has decided to discontinue its institutional trading business as part of an effort to return to its core competencies...
