Year to Date 2008 Biggest % Winners

Why is this important? Because big winners tend to be good companies with good stories that last longer than 1 year. Because they tend to be the largest gainers for the year. Of course, some may be destined for a 50% pullback as well. Ethanol Stocks - Refuel? Barrons June 9, 2008

They list 3 stocks, PEIX, VSE, AVR. All are down 80% off their 2006 highs and down more than 50% in 2008. They are all up 5% this morning on the Barrons article. They are trading below book value but have lots of debt and are no value plays. Only AVR has a good looking chart with a bottom and base and a PnF buy. VSE is the largest in revenue and has some insider buying. PEIX has heavy insider selling and is the smallest., but also has lots of insider sales.

Latest Ken Fisher - LONG INTC, NOK, GE

Jeffrey Immelt wants General Electric (nyse: GE - news - people ) (32, GE ) to be the prime choice for greenie investors. This has been his ambition for a while; FORBES described it in a cover story three years ago. He is way too late to this party, and in any event most of his company's revenue sources have nothing to do with saving the planet. But ge is still a great firm, and it's soon to be a great stock. Dominant in pretty much everything it does, GE has nonetheless lagged the global stock market since 2004 and is down 23% since last fall. That's because Immelt missed earnings expectations in what the media described as GE's worst blowup since 1987. That year, by the way, was a great time to buy GE. The unpleasant earnings surprise is a small blip in GE's century-long growth story, and this is a good stock for the megacap era I expect over the next few years. It costs 13 times 2008 earnings and yields 3.7%. The Finnish handset maker Nokia (nyse: NOK - news - pe...

12th annual Churchill Club Semiconductor Forecast dinner

From Barrons TechBlog: What’s the outlook for chip stocks? That’s the question at issue tonight at the 12th annual Churchill Club Semiconductor Forecast dinner at the Hyatt in Santa Clara. The lineup is a good one: Bill Tai, general partner of Charles River Ventures, is the moderator. Christopher Danely, analyst at J.P. Morgan. Dan Niles, CEO at Neuberger Berman Technology Management. Mark Lipacis, analyst, Morgan Stanley. Sangeeth Peruri, managing director and portfolio manager, J.&W. Seligman. Stay tuned for live coverage of their observations and picks; keep reloading this post if you’re reading Wednesday night. The highlights follow: Last year there was a slightly different set of players. Jim Covello of Goldman Sachs picked Sandisk (SNDK) as a long and Novellus (NVLS) as a short. Joe Osha of Merrill Lynch picked Texas Instruments (TXN). Niles picked Skyworks (SWKS) and Trident (TRID). Tai picked Microtune (TUNE) and Integrated Device Technology (IDTI). All of them expected the...

The Case for Etrade - Longs : June 4th, 2008

Etrade has had a mighty fall this year (actually last year) due to the credit crisis and subprime loan fallout. It was 25 last summer and got as low as $2. I considered entry at $2 but fear kept me out. I had even considered a run on all my Etrade accounts. Well, it's June and it's really leveled off around $4 and looks like an excellent long entry point. I see 2 favorable articles that discuss ideas. I especially like the Covered call option, as it's a 17% gain by Jan'09 if the stock goes nowhere and 42% gain if it gets to 5 from 4. I do believe downside is minimal. I'll be reviewing approximately 6 portfolios one at a time over the coming weeks. I plan to present more frequent updates, as time permits. The portfolios will cover: Tech, Consumer Durables, Commodities, Biotechs, ETFs, and China/India(possibly Brazil/Russia) --- the BRICs... Commodities will not just be OIL, but may cover alternative energies.... I'll also cover some random thoughts and stocks that look like good entries.
